Google Becomes an Official Registrar

I have been using Google Alerts to receive news by email.  You choose your keywords, and Google sends the related news to your email. This service has saved me some time during last couple of months.  But last week I have discovered a new feature of Google Alerts.  You can use Google Alerts for SEO purposes.

If you are working on SEO, you should be familiar with site:http://www.domain.com and link:http://www.domain.com search strings.  We always wonder how our websites do at Google, so we check by site: string to see how many pages of our website is listed in Google index, and by link: string to see how many websites are linking to ours (back links).  By using Google Alerts, you can easily enter one of two search strings.

Google Becomes an Official Registrar

Google has become a domain registrar after completing a contract with ICANN.  Google has paid a $2,500 initial application fee to become an ICANN-accredited registrar and $7,000 accreditation fee to access the database of .com, .net., .org, .pro, .info, .name and .biz extensions.

"Google has become a domain name registrar to learn more about the Internet’s domain name system," a company official stated. "While we have no plans to register domains at this time, we believe this information can help us increase the quality of our search results."  But some authority websites and authors have shared different opinions about Google’s new plans.  Some believe, Google is planning to control the domain name market and keep track of domain owners to prevent search engine spamming.

Google has yet to make any announcements about becoming domain registrar number 895, but it is being discussed on many webmaster community sites.

Google News

Google has been showing Froogle results at the top of search results as "product search results". Many website owners are not aware of this. If you sell products on your website, prepare your froogle search feed, and upload it to froogle. With the right title selection you can make it to the top of Google search engine results even for very competitive keywords.

Here’s an example snapshot of what I am talking about. I have shown the froogle results with red tag.

On Page Off Page Optimization

Before starting our Search Engine Optimization Project, we have to break it down into two main categories; “On Page Optimization” and “Off Page Optimization”.

On Page Optimization :  Any SEO method we use on the web page which is visible to visitors and search engine spiders.  This includes our headers, content within body tags, and both internal and external links on our page.  A perfect on page optimization means, a web page with proper web design usability guidelines improved with SEO techniques.

Off Page Optimization :  Off page optimization includes all links from our page to other websites (external links) , and from other websites to our page (back links).  There are other facts which effects off page optimization such as alt tag, reference tag, title attribute, and target of links.  Also Search Engine Marketing is an important contributor to off page optimization.

Professional SEO of a website should be considered as a project.  Before starting our project, we have to work on planning, and get ready for real work.  Throughout the SEO tutorials, I will show you how to plan, implement, and improve an SEO project.  If you already have a website, and would like to optimize it for search engines, don’t worry since I will help you with redesign process of your website without affecting the look and feel of your site for your visitors.

SEO professionals have different ideas about off page and on page optimization, and some think one is more important than the other.  My experiences tell me that both on page optimization and off page optimization have equal value for a successful SEO project.  Your site can have a great on page optimization, but it will never be fully successful without the proper off page optimization, and visa versa.

With this article, we have defined the two main components of Search Engine Optimization, and the importance of handling SEO as a project.  The ideal SEO team should have two groups of employees, one group working specifically with “on page optimization” and other working with “off page optimization”.  But communication between the two groups will be the key for success.

Do I need a group of employees or a professional company working for my SEO project?

The answer is no.  Even though SEO is time consuming, you can very well achieve successful search engine results by using the right SEO techniques, and working continuously.  I will be publishing detailed tutorials about both on page and off page optimization following days.
