Google Becomes an Official Registrar

I have been using Google Alerts to receive news by email.  You choose your keywords, and Google sends the related news to your email. This service has saved me some time during last couple of months.  But last week I have discovered a new feature of Google Alerts.  You can use Google Alerts for SEO purposes.

If you are working on SEO, you should be familiar with site:http://www.domain.com and link:http://www.domain.com search strings.  We always wonder how our websites do at Google, so we check by site: string to see how many pages of our website is listed in Google index, and by link: string to see how many websites are linking to ours (back links).  By using Google Alerts, you can easily enter one of two search strings.

By entering site:http://www.domain.com and setting your alert, you will receive email updates when a new page of your website is indexed in Google.  This alert will email you only if a new page is listed, not for the re-crawled old pages. So it’s a great, time saving feature for us.

By entering link:http://www.domain.com and setting your alert, you will receive email updates when a new site is linking to your website. Basically you will get an email when you have a new back link.  Below is a screen shot from Google Alerts .

If you check your indexed pages, and back links frequently, this would be a time saving tool for you.
